　イギリスの作家、J・R・R・トールキン(John Ronald Reuel Tolkien(1892/01/03〜1973/09/02))によるファンタジー小説。
1937年に発表された『ホビットの冒険(The Hobbit)』の続編として、1954〜1955年に渡り全3巻出版されました。

　著者のトールキンは言語学の権威であり、ヨーロッパの神話に大きな影響を受けた人物です。
北欧神話にルーツを持つエルフが用いるとするエルフ語の作成などは、それを象徴する代表的な試みです。

　『指環物語』は今日ある姿のエルフ、ドワーフ、ミスリルなどの祖であり、そのため現代ファンタジー界の父とも呼べます。
